Hypoxic refers to conditions characterized by a reduced level of oxygen below physiological or standard atmospheric concentrations. In cell biology and biopharmaceutical manufacturing, hypoxic conditions are intentionally applied during cell culture to better mimic the in vivo microenvironment of specific tissues — such as bone marrow, tumor tissue, or stem cell niches — thereby preserving cell phenotype, functionality, and potency. Controlled hypoxia is particularly relevant in the expansion and manufacturing of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs), and other cell therapy products where oxygen tension is a CPP.
