An antigen is any molecule — typically a protein, polysaccharide, or nucleic acid — recognized by the adaptive immune system and capable of triggering an immune response, including antibody production, destruction of infected cells, and immunological memory. Antigens can originate from pathogens, allergens, tumor cells, or therapeutic proteins.
